The Development Process Of Hematology Analyzer

Hematology Analyzers Play An Important Role In Clinical Testing

The blood analyzer has the advantages of high specificity and high accuracy in clinical testing. It can be used for clinical detection of blood cells, and the operation is relatively simple. It can assist doctors in evaluating the patient’s physical condition and can be used for clinical medical guidance. With the continuous advancement of science and technology and the increasing demand for instruments and equipment in laboratory work, blood analyzers are also constantly being developed and optimized.

Evolution Of Automated Blood Cell Counters

Since the 1980s, blood analyzers have developed from “three part” to “five part” including lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils, and neutrophils; Combining new technologies such as laser scattering, radio frequency conductance, and cytochemical staining with traditional electrical impedance methods, a blood analyzer with more advanced functions has been developed, which can detect immature cells and T lymphocytes, and perform immunotype or Perform reticulocyte count analysis to provide more clinical analysis parameters and implement larger-scale screening examinations.

The Difference Between The Early Blood Analyzer And The Present Blood Analyzer

1. Increase of analysis parameters

Early blood analyzers could only count red and white blood cells separately by switching. Later, due to the increased demand for hemoglobin detection in blood analysis, a separate hemoglobin colorimeter was equipped. During this period, the most used blood cell counters in China were Coulter ZF and Hemoglobin meter. Later, with the advancement of technology and the increase of demand, several parameters such as platelets, hematocrit, mean red blood cell volume, and red blood cell volume distribution width were added. At present, some instruments can even provide 40~50 kinds of measurement or calculation parameters. However, many new parameters are still not applicable to clinical practice and are only used as experiments.

2. Advances in dilution technology

Early hematology analyzers required manual dilution before measurement, which was time-consuming, laborious and inaccurate. Later, some instruments were equipped with special diluters for off-machine dilution, which reduced the trouble and errors caused by manual operations. Modern blood analyzers have added automatic dilution technology and automatic sampling methods to the instrument body, which has become more advanced, improving the accuracy of sampling and dilution, increasing the speed of sampling, and improving operability. Make the detection speed faster.

3. Increase of platelet count function

None of the early blood counters included platelet counts. In the 1970s, platelet counters that needed to use PRP plasma were developed, such as SYSMEX PA-701 and CONTRAVE 1000, and most of them were equipped with special PRP centrifuges. The Baker S-810 platelet analyzer, which appeared in my country after the 1980s, has a separate platelet analysis and measurement channel. In addition to the number of platelets, two new parameters are provided, mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet volume distribution width (PDW). Later, the blood analyzer incorporated the important function of platelet count into the range of complete blood count, which made the blood analyzer more widely applicable.

4. Improvement of Quantitative Department

For the accuracy of the counting results, quantitative control should also be carried out on the amount of liquid directly entering the counting holes. Initially, people used U-shaped mercury tube manometers, and later people controlled the inhalation volume of specimens through photoelectric cells, micro-injector technology, and floating ball quantitative technology. Now the capacity control technology can more accurately control the amount of specimens entering the counting area, which can make the quantification of the cell suspension entering the counting area more accurate and pollution-free. At the same time, it can also judge whether the small hole is blocked, which is convenient for maintenance.

5. Automatic sampling technology

The initial instruments required manual sampling and dilution, and later there were external dedicated sampling diluters. Later, the instrument draws blood samples according to the size of the negative pressure, and micro-syringe sampling technology has also appeared. Many of today’s more advanced blood analyzers use ceramic rotary valves to dispense blood samples. The sampling method has also evolved from the initial single pre-dilution method to both pre-dilution and whole blood methods.

6. Instrument cleaning technology

The original instruments need to be manually soaked or cleaned with a hair rinse after the measurement is completed, but now many instruments can automatically flush the counting holes and pipelines after completing the detection of a specimen, and can also simultaneously clean the sampler, diluter, and samplers. Thorough cleaning inside and outside the needle reduces the chance of cross-contamination, and it can also perform cleaning procedures automatically when the machine is turned on and off.

7. Improvement of small hole tube technology

The small hole tube is a key part for precise counting. In the early days, there was only a small hole tube with a diameter of 100μ, and it was generally exposed to the outside. The small hole of the current instrument is generally built-in, which reduces the chance of contamination and provides an automatic cleaning function, so that automatic flushing can be provided after each count, reducing the chance of cross-contamination and improving the counting speed. Now, in order to improve the counting accuracy, various technologies including sweeping flow technology, anti-reflux device, hydrodynamic focusing technology, etc. are used in the improvement and design of small hole tubes.

8. Progress of the allegation process

Hematology analyzers require routine quality control to monitor the accuracy of their assay results. Early hematology analyzers relied on manual recording of quality control data. Now due to the development of microcomputer technology, many functions including quality control programs can be realized on the analyzer. The daily quality control data can be stored in the machine and sent directly to the manufacturer’s server through the network. The equipment manufacturer can directly understand the daily quality control situation of each device through the network, guide the user and perform calibration and maintenance on the instrument when necessary.

Conclusion

Nowadays, fully automatic instead of semi-automatic has become a trend. The combination of vacuum blood collection, code recognition and Internet has become common. Many blood analyzers can complete a large number of sample analysis in a short time, and are equipped with an automatic sample adding system. The hematology analyzer is always just a screening tool, and the pathological morphology of blood cells still needs to be detected by traditional microscopy. In exceptional cases, microscopic examination of blood smears is required for test results.
